How Often Should You Remove Facial Hair

How to remove facial hair is a conundrum numerous women ponder every time they look in the mirror early in the morning.

Although there are different types of products in the market for hair removal to remove facial hair is specially challenging because the skin on our face is sensitive. To make matters worse during menopause or after it because of the drop in our estrogen levels facial hair increases. So what options do you have when one’s facial hair is making you feel uncomfortable?

Our options to remove facial hair can be categorized into two: permanent and non-permanent. Let us start with the less expensive category which is the non-permanent. Shaving, this is ok for other parts of the body but not for a woman’s face. If you are using this method stop because it makes the edges of the hair blunt therefore making it look thicker once it grows out. There are also depilatories, waxing and sugaring. Depilatories chemically weaken the hair so that it breaks off when you wipe the cream off after a couple of minutes. The downside is the chemicals tend to be harsh and may irritate or burn the skin. Waxing and sugaring because it pulls the hair from its place does involve a bit of pain. All the aforementioned methods to remove facial hair are relatively inexpensive or at the very least practical however they do need to be repeated regularly.

There are two recognized permanent hair removal methods and they are via laser and electrolysis. Both of these methods are quite costly and may need touch ups after the initial treatment. In electrolysis each hair follicle is killed when a needle is inserted into and a current of energy is delivered. The drawback is that it is tedious because each hair follicle has to undergo this procedure and it has also been documented that on average there are still around 30% of the follicles that once electrolyzed will still produce hair. This is why touch ups are still needed and that it may take more than one session to permanently remove facial hair through electrolysis. The other permanent hair removal method is by lasers. This treatment also kills the hair follicles so that hair cannot be produced. Needles are not used in its place laser light is focused on the areas to be treated. Although laser treatment should not result in pain some rare cases have occurred of burning and scarring having occurred.
